The Welsh Sea Rowing Association Northern League Season Starts

With strong winds and a fast tide, the decision was made early on Sunday morning for the races to go ahead, although the course for the Men’s and Mixed races had to be shortened in order to ensure safety remained a priority.

The ladies kicked off proceedings at around 10.30am, with Port battling for position with Aberdyfi’s experienced Ladies Veterans crew for the entire race and both crews finishing just two seconds apart and nine minutes ahead of any other crew. Aberdyfi took the spoils in the Ladies Vets category.

Next into action came the men’s crews. At this stage the swell was increasing, as was the wind, so the men set out on a shorter course than planned. Bull Bay coped best with the elements taking the Men’s title, while Pwhelli took the Senior Vets trophy and Porthmadog the Super Vets title. A novice men’s crew from Porthmadog also gained vital experience in their first ever race, a brilliant start for the rest of the season.

After a short break everyone was back in the boats for the Mixed race. Again due to increased wind and swell the course was shortened, but battling mother nature proved to be exhilarating for all involved, with hugh smiles all round on the return. Porthmadog took the trophy once again, finishing the course a minute faster than any other boat, while Aberdyfi took the Mixed Vets title.

With a number of strong, experienced crews as well as some enthusiastic novices, this season promises to be an exciting one in the WSRA Northern League, and with the next race taking place on 3 July in Bull Bay there’s plenty of time for ambitious crews to train together and build on their strength and skills.

All rowers in Porthmadog Rowing Club (based at Madoc Yacht Club) would like to thank their sponsors Purple Moose and Gelert for their generous support.
